Some horsecarts found in Celtic graves show hints that their platform was suspended in a frame, elastically. The Romans in the first centuries BC used sprung waggons for overland journeys.With the decline of the antique civilizations these techniques almost disappeared.
In the Middle Ages all travellers who were not walking rode, save the elderly and the infirm. A trip in an unsprung cart over unpaved roads was not lightly undertaken. Closed carriages began to be more widely used by the upper classes in the 16th century. In 1601 a short-lived law was passed in England banning the use of carriages by men, it being considered effeminate. Better sprung vehicles were developed in the 17th century. New lighter and more fashionably varied conveyances, with fanciful new names, began to compete with one another from the mid-18th century. Coachbuilders cooperated with carvers, gilders, painters, lacquerworkers, glazers and upholsterers to produce not just the family's state coach for weddings and funerals but light, smart fast comfortable vehicles for pleasure riding and display.
In British and French coaches, the coachman drove from a raised coachbox at the front. In Spain the driver continued to ride one of the horses, as also in the 1939 state visit procession in Canada (illustration, left).
From the 1860s, few rich Europeans continued to use their posting coaches for long-distance travel: a first-class railway carriage was the faster modern alternative. Then, in the 1890s, just as automobiles came into use, "coaching" became an upper-class sport in Britain and America, where gentlemen would take the reins of the kinds of large vehicles of types generally driven by a professional coachman.

"o" Loy Kratong "o"

On the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, the tide in the rivers is highest and the moon at its brightest, creating a romantic setting ideal for lovers. The Thai people choose this day to hold the 'Loy Kratong' festival, or the 'festival of light.' Loy Kratong is one of the two most recognized festivals in the country.
Loy Kratong is probably the most picturesque and beautiful of all Thai celebrations. 'Loy' literally means 'to float,' while 'kratong' refers to the lotus-shaped receptacle which can float on the water. Originally, the kratong was made of banana leaves or the layers of the trunk of a banana tree or a spider lily plant. A kratong contains food, betel nuts, flowers, joss sticks, candle and coins. The making of a kratong is much more creative these days as many more materials are available.
The Loy Kratong ritual is a simple one. One needs only to light the candles and the joss sticks, make one's wishes and let it float away with the current of a river or a canal.
On that day, thousands of people will gather beside the canals and rivers. With kratong in hands, they light the candle, put some coins in the kratong and silently make a wish, and carefully place their kratongs in the water and release them to the current.
They watch intently as the float drifts silently downstream, hoping that the candle will not go out. Its flame is said to signify longevity, fulfillment of wishes and release from sins. Altogether it is considered a romantic night for couples or lovers. Couples who make a wish together on Loy Kratong are thought to stay together in the future.
Origins Different legends surround the origins of Loy Kratong. The most popular version is it was an expression of gratitude to the goddess of water 'Phra Mae Kongka' for having extensively used, and sometimes polluted, the water from the rivers and canals. It is also in part a thanksgiving for her bounty in providing water for the livelihood of the people.
Some believe the festival originates from Buddhism. They say the offering of flowers, candles and joss-sticks is a tribute of respect to the footprint of the Lord Buddha on the sandy beach of the Narmaha River in India, as well as to the great Serpent and dwellers of the underwater world, after the Lord Buddha's visit to their watery realm. It is possible that this is derived from a Hindu festival that pays tribute to the god Vishnu, who meditates at the center of the ocean.
Others believe that the floral kratong is offered to the pagoda containing the Lord Buddha's topknot, which was cut off at his self-ordination and is now in heaven. Another explanation is that it is a way to pay respect to one's ancestors.
Whatever the true origin, the practice of Loy Kratong first began in the ancient kingdom of Sukhothai in the 13th century. A young queen named Nang Noppamas was believed to be the one who made a small boat laden with candles and incense and floated it down the river. The name Nang Noppamas has been associated with Loy Kratong ever since.
Today, Loy Kratong offers a unique occasion to celebrate. It's a good time for people to make wishes and look to the future as they float their floral offerings along the waterways.
Where to celebrate Although celebrated nationwide, Loy Kratong is particularly delightful in the provinces of Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya and Bangkok.
As the place of origin of the festival, Sukhothai rightly remains the focal point of the celebrations. The festival comes with a spectacular light-and-sound show held in the ancient and traditional setting of the Sukhothai historical park.
Chiang Mai is another prime site to celebrate Loy Kratong. The festival is known in northern dialect as 'Yi Peng.' The largest kratongs are decorated floats, paraded through the town on trucks. The colorfully lit floats form a long glittering parade as they make their way to the river.
Meanwhile, up above thousands of 'khom loy' (floating lanterns) drift into the night sky. These large balloon-like lanterns are released at temples and sometimes from private homes in the hope that misfortune flies away with them.
The Chao Phraya River is one of the main waterways to celebrate the Loy Kratong festival. In Bangkok, riverside hotels organize special celebrations for their guests. In some hotels, swimming pools are turned into a temporary river for the Loy Kratong celebration.
Environmental IssuesAlthough Loy Kratong is an old Thai tradition, celebrated continuously since ancient times, the use of modern foam materials to make the kratong has taken its toll on the environment.
Today, instead of synthetic foams, natural materials such as the original banana leaves or even bread have been used to make the floats. In addition, kratong are increasingly being released in small canals or swimming pools to prevent pollution in the rivers. In this way, the old tradition can still be preserved while our rivers and waterways remain in pristine condition for future generations.

"o" Chiang Mai "o"

Chiang Mai la Rose du Nord, parfois appelé aussi « Chiengmai », est la seconde plus grande ville de Thaïlande, culturellement la plus significative au nord de la Thaïlande et la capitale de la province de Chiang Mai. Elle est située à 18° 47' 20 ″N, 98° 59' 00 ″E, 800 kilomètres au nord de Bangkok, parmi les plus hautes montagnes du pays. La ville se situe sur les rives de la rivière Ping, un tributaire important du fleuve de Chao Phraya.
Ces dernières années Chiang Mai est devenu une ville de plus en plus moderne, bien qu'il lui manque le lustre cosmopolite de Bangkok. Il a beaucoup d'attractions pour les milliers de visiteurs étrangers qui viennent Chiang Mai tous les ans. La force historique de Chiang Mai dérive de son importante situation stratégique près d'une branche méridionale de l’ancienne route de la soie, et longtemps avant l'afflux moderne des visiteurs étrangers la ville a servi de centre important pour son artisanat, les ombrelles, les bijoux (en particulier argent) et ces sculptures sur bois.
La province de Chiang Mai a une population estimée d'environ 1,6 million d’habitants, dont 6 à 700.000 dans la ville de Chiang Mai. Les chiffres concernant la population varient beaucoup : certains pensent que seulement les gens vivant dans « la zone centrale » (Amphoe Muang) de Chiang Mai doivent être comptés comme résidants de la ville, mais Chiang Mai est un cas incontestable d’étalement urbain. Est-ce qu’une personne habitant Mae Jo ou Hang Dong, peut être comptée en tant que résidant de ville de Chiang Mai? Des questions semblables s'appliquent à New York, à Los Angeles, et à Tokyo. En conclusion, cependant, il est assez facile de savoir quand vous vous trouvez dans la ville de Chiang Mai (pop. 700.000), et quand vous vous trouvez en dehors dans la province de Chiang Mai (pop. 1.600.000).

Histoire

Le Roi Mengrai a fondé la ville de Chiang Mai (signification « nouvelle ville ») en 1296, et elle a succédé à Chiang Rai en tant que capital du royaume de Lannathai. Mengrai a construit un fossé et un mur autour de la ville pour la protéger contre des incursions provenant de la Birmanie. Avec le déclin du royaume de Lannathai, la ville a perdu son importance et souvent occupée par les Birmans ou par les Thaïs d'Ayutthaya. En raison des guerres menées par les Birmans qui ont culminé avec la chute d'Ayutthaya en avril 1767, Chiang Mai fut vidé de ses habitants demeurant abandonné pendant quinze années (1776 - 1791). Lampang a été la capitale de ce qui restait du Royaume Lannathai pendant ce temps.
Chiang Mai est formellement devenu une région du Siam en 1774, quand le Roi Taksin a capturé la ville aux mains des Birmans. Chiang Mai s'est relevé tant culturellement qu’économiquement, pour devenir graduellement ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui, soit la capitale officielle du nord de la Thaïlande, seconde ville en importance après Bangkok.
Le peuple parle généralement le Kham Muang (également connu sous le nom de thaï ou lanna nordique) entre eux, mais le thaï central de Bangkok est employé dans l'éducation et est compris par la plupart des gens. Le vieil alphabet Kham Muang est maintenant seulement étudié par des érudits et le thaï nordique est généralement écrit en utilisant l'alphabet thaï standard.

นอกจากนี้การพิสูจน์และการแสดงความยินดีต่อการได้เห็นเลือดจากการฉีกขาดของเหยื่อพรหมจรรย์หลังการส่งตัวเจ้าสาวก็เป็นเรื่องที่หลายวัฒนธรรมให้ความสำคัญคล้าย ๆ กัน ในประเทศไทยแม้จะไม่มีประเพณีพิสูจน์เลือดพรหมจรรย์อย่างจะจะตา แต่การรณรงค์ทาง
สังคมให้ผู้หญิงรักษาพรหมจรรย์กันอย่างออกหน้าออกตาในช่วงวันวาเลนไทน์ที่ผ่านมาก็มีความหมายที่ไม่ต่างกันนัก ประหนึ่งว่าถ้าสูญเสียพรหมจารีไปแล้ว ชีวิตของผู้หญิงก็จะไม่มีคุณค่าใดเหลืออยู่อีกแล้ว ซึ่งแตกต่างจากชีวิตของผู้ชายอย่างสิ้นเชิง
เรื่องประจำเดือนคือราคี ก็ดูจะเป็นความเชื่อที่แพร่หลายในหลายวัฒนธรรม และจากราคีนี้เองทำให้ผู้หญิงถูกกีดกั้นจากการเข้าใกล้สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ทั้งหลาย ผู้หญิงอียิปต์ในช่วงมีประจำเดือนจะถูกห้ามไม่ให้ยืนเบื้องพระพักตร์พระเจ้าและไม่ควรกล่าววจนะในอันกุรอาน ดังเช่นผู้หญิงจีนไม่ควรไหว้เจ้าในช่วงนี้เช่นกัน
อีกทั้งโลกของผู้หญิงอียิปต์ส่วนใหญ่ก็ไม่ต่างจากโลกของผู้หญิงในสังคมอื่น ๆ นัก คือ โลกแคบ ๆ ของกิจกรรมภายในบ้าน และข้ออ้างที่เก็บผู้หญิงไว้ในโลกแคบ ๆ นี้ก็ไม่ต่างเช่นกัน คือ เพื่อทำหน้าที่ (ที่ทรงเกียรติ ?) ของเมียและแม่ และเพื่อความปลอดภัยของผู้หญิงเอง เพราะโลกภายนอกล้วนเต็มไปด้วยผู้ชายที่ชั่วร้าย ผู้เขียนจึงได้สรุปถึงชีวิตของเธอซึ่งก็คือชีวิตของผู้หญิงอียิปต์ส่วนใหญ่ว่า
"โลกของพ่อ ของแผ่นดิน ของประเทศชาติ ศาสนา ภาษาและหลักศีลธรรม มันกลายเป็นโลกที่อยู่รอบตัวฉัน โลกที่สร้างขึ้นจากร่างของเพศชายโดยมี ร่างเพศหญิงของฉันอาศัยอยู่" (หน้า 76)

และด้วยการยืนยันอย่างหนักแน่นของแม่ตลอดมา ทำให้เธอสามารถเรียนจนจบแพทย์ ชีวิตของเธอคงเป็นเสมือนความใฝ่ฝันของแม่ ความใฝ่ฝันที่ไม่เคยเป็นจริงในชีวิตของแม่แต่มันสามารถถูกถ่ายทอดผ่านทางเธอ แม่จะเรียกเธอว่า "คุณหมอนาวัล" ตั้งแต่วันแรกที่เธอได้เข้าเรียนแพทย์ และในวันที่เธอเรียนจบ "แม่ดูเหมือนดอกไม้ที่กำลังเบ่งบาน เสียงหัวเราะแบบเด็ก ๆ ประกายระยิบในดวงตาสีน้ำผึ้งของแม่หวนคืนมา" (หน้า 189)

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter*), "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England. *(For more information on Lent/Easter check out - Easter on the Net)
During this time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch.
As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor the "Mother Church" - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration . People began honoring their mothers as well as the church.
In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston, Mass ever year.
In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.
Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.
While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.

Le premier 14 juillet, c'est bien sûr celui de 1789 : les émeutiers, venus chercher à la Bastille des armes pour riposter aux troupes du roi, s'emparent de la prison, symbole du pouvoir absolutiste.

Les célébrations suivantes
Après 1790, le 14 juillet fut célébré mais il fut souvent estompé par d’autres événements : l’anniversaire du 10 août 1792 (destitution de Louis XVI et commune insurrectionnelle de Paris) et/ou celui du 9 thermidor (27 juillet 1794).
Après les célébrations de 1790, Mirabeau se met au travail et prépare un rapport sur les fêtes publiques nationales et militaires, qui n'aura pas de suite. La Fête de la Fédération, en tant que telle, n'est pas non plus reprise : le 14 juillet 1791, au lendemain de la fuite à Varennes, l'Assemblée ne s'y associe pas. En 1792, la patrie a été déclarée en danger le 11 juillet : la fête a lieu, mais sans éclat. En 1793, la fête est limitée à l'enceinte de l'Assemblée qui apprend alors la mort de Marat. La fête est célébrée le 10 août, jour où le public court à Saint-Denis pour disperser les os du Roi de France.
Ce sera la dernière tentative de la période révolutionnaire. Il faudra attendre 1880 pour que la loi instituant le 14 juillet jour de fête nationale soit proposée par le Sénat et adoptée.
En 1796, le Directoire décide de célébrer pêle-mêle les 27 et 28 juillet, les anniversaires des 14 juillet, 10 août et 9 thermidor. Ces jours-là, le cortège, qui défila dans Paris, comprenait notamment des jeunes gens et des jeunes filles de " 18 ans au moins ". En 1797 a lieu la première cérémonie militaire. Le 14 juillet est célébré par les troupes dans les pays conquis, notamment en Italie.
En 1799, le 14 juillet n’est plus celui de la " liberté " mais de la " Concorde " et se résume à un défilé militaire. Le 14 juillet 1800, la garde consulaire défile des Tuileries au Champ de Mars. Après 1804, le 14 juillet s’efface devant le 15 août, date de naissance de Napoléon.
Après 1814, c’est le 5 août, fête de Saint-Louis, qui lui est préféré.
Après la révolution de 1830, Louis-Philippe associe le souvenir de la " grande victoire nationale " du 14 juillet 1789 à la pose solennelle de la première pierre de la colonne érigée en l’honneur des martyrs de juillet sur la place de la Bastille, le 27 janvier 1831. Chaque année, se déroulent les " Fêtes de juillet ".
La Deuxième République ne rétablit pas le 14 juillet mais fête la Première République par des discours et des banquets le 22 septembre.
Le Second empire fixe la date de la fête nationale au 15 août, date de la naissance de Napoléon Bonaparte. Le 14 juillet reste célébré par les Républicains. Malgré la proclamation de la République le 4 septembre 1870, il faudra encore attendre dix ans pour que le 14 juillet soit proclamé " Fête nationale ".

Just as the most splendid vista can seem incomplete without music to focus and enhance the mood, a Royal Barge Procession, magnificent as it is, is not complete without the chanting of boat songs. Whenever the royal vessels travel, these songs are heard in the ringing timbre of Commodore Mongkol Saengsawang, who commands the Royal Thai Navy’s Small Craft Division. ‘‘My division supervises the use of small boats, and especially activities connected with royal ceremonies involving boats,’’ he said. ‘‘In 1996, during the celebrations to mark 50 years of His Majesty the King’s reign, a Royal Kathin Ceremony was held that included a Royal Barge Procession. That was when HM the King‘s Royal Barge Narayana Song Suban was used for the first time. ‘‘We knew in advance that this year a similar ceremony would take place, and we prepared for it. By the end of 1998 we had already checked all of the royal barges to make sure that they were in proper condition for use, and we made early arrangements for the supply of crews. ‘‘In February this year the Royal Thai Navy held a meeting to decide which units would row which vessels. ‘‘We took regular soldiers from each unit and made them practice until they had the procedure down. Before the event takes place the men must be drilled again, under close supervision.‘‘Traditionally, men from the Small Craft Division must row the boat in which the King is seated. Our soldiers have prepared themselves for this well, and are completely ready. ‘‘As the division’s director, I have the responsibility of being in charge of the vessel, which is a great honour for me. ‘‘In the year 2001 I will retire, but when I met my commander he asked who would be chanting the boat songs. He didn’t want anyone else to do it, so we agreed that I will again do it, as I have in the past. That is fine. I am always ready to perform any duty for His Majesty. ‘‘There are four chants, sung at different times. The first is called the kroen-hay. This verse says that the beautiful boat is ready to begin moving. ‘‘The second, the chalawa-hay, is slow in tempo, and is heard when the boat is moving gradually away from the pier and the oarsmen are still rowing slowly, before the fun starts. It has a wonderful text that praises the King. ‘‘The third chant is the most fun. It is called moonla-hay and is about the magnificence of the procession of boats. ‘‘The oarsman have a good time because they really get into the rhythm of the song. During this period the boats pick up speed. ‘‘The words to the fourth chant are about merit-making, especially the presentation of kathin robes. It is sung as the boats are arriving at their destination. ‘‘The old tradition required the chanter to be in the King’s boat, seated in front of the monarch with his hands in a wai position, intoning verses to him in a quiet, soothing voice. ‘‘But today the singer travels in the Anantanagaraj barge, the one that carries the kathin robes.He can’t sit in the King’s boat because he makes too much noise. Today we use modern technology. ‘‘In the boat where I sit there is a radio which transmits my voice to a receiver on the top of a high building, from where it is broadcast to the other boats, which are equipped with receivers and amplifiers. ‘‘This lets all the rowers hear the boat songs, while the royal barge in which the King is seated remains quiet. ‘‘All that is heard in the King’s boat is an occasional quiet exchange between the leader of the oarsmen and the oarsmen themselves. ‘‘After they’ve been quiet for a long time they’re allowed to raise their voices to release tension, but first the King must be asked for his permission, so that he knows it is coming. ‘‘It wouldn’t be good if everything was quiet for a long period and then everyone suddenly raised their voice at once. The King would be startled. ‘‘Only the oarsmen in front take part in these exchanges. The ones in the back can’t because their voices would travel over the top of the King’s head, which is not permitted. ‘‘The verses sung on this occasion were composed by a naval officer, Commodore Thongyoi Saengsinchai, so it can be said that every aspect of this procession has been taken care of by the navy. ‘‘There are no official arrangements or standards applied in choosing the men who chant the boat songs. What’s important is you have to like to sing. And you should be able to sing all kinds of songs. We navy men who are interested in boat songs get together in the evening to sing. Being a little drunk doesn’t hurt, although we’re not what you’d call real drunks. ‘‘You have to drink enough to loosen up and lose any inhibitions you have about really letting your voice cut loose. Then the sound of it is clear and there’s a ring to it. ‘’If any part of a song sounds wrong we do it over again until it’s right. It’s a part of Thai culture, so it has to be good . . . and it’s fun, too.’’

"o" The Royal Barges of Siam "o"

Some 300 years ago, Louis XIV of France commissioned Monsieur La Loubert as ambassador to the Court of Siam during the reign of King Narai the Great of the Ayutthaya period . The group was accompanied by a number of Jesuit priests, one of whom was Father Guy Tarchard. in his diary Voyage de Siam des Peres Jesuit, he described the barge procession that came to receive the Royal Message and gifts, saying "Four enormous barges came to welcome us, each manned by 80 oarsmen. I have never seen such a sight. The first two were in the shape of sea-horses and entirely gilded, looking extremely realistic as they sailed up from afar. Two members of the King's Royal Guards accompanied the barges to receive the gifts from the King of France. Upon accepting the gifts, the barges stood by in the middle of the river as a sign of reverence to the precious cargo. " Father Tarchard also described the barge procession carrying the Royal Message and gifts out of Ayutthaya. "The long Royal Barge procession that moved in an orderly fashion consisted of over 150 barges. Together with other boats, they covered the river as far as the eye could follow. It was a breathtaking sight. The sound of traditional chanting reverberated along both banks of the river which were crowded with people who were waiting to see the spectacular event."
This picture of the barge procession is nothing new to the Thai people. Thais have always lived along rivers and canals, and boats were naturally the most convenient form of transportation. The high water level leads to a time of great merriment and festivities, and Royal ceremonies or important festivals will see a larger number of observers and boats than one would expect. During the Ayutthaya period, Van Viet, a Dutch businessman in Siam observed that in Royal ceremonies along the river, or the procession to welcome ambassadors, funeral processions and even boat races, the number of participating boats was tremendous. One foreigner noted in the 18th century that Ayutthaya possessed a total of 200,000 boats, and each ceremony by river could have a total of 300-400 boats manned by some 14,000 people. Another French priest named Bouvet once tallied a number of 30,000 oarsmen.
"The Royal Barge Procession consists of 7-8 barges, manned by 400 oarsmen, followed by some 1,000 - 1,200 courtiers riding in the beautifully carved and gilded barges. Some were exclusively for the musicians."

Au même titre que les légumes, les fruits sont une bénédiction pour notre santé :
Ils évitent le surpoids. Avec 15 à 25 kcal pour 100 g, les fruits sont peu caloriques, mais sont pourtant légers et rassasiants, grâce aux fibres alimentaires qu'ils contiennent. Ils constituent aussi une mine de vitamines et de sels minéraux. Ils tiennent une place de choix dans tous les menus équilibrés afin de lutter contre la surcharge pondérale et l'obésité.
Ils protègent le cœur et les vaisseaux sanguins. Grâce à leur richesse en antioxydants et en fibres alimentaires, les fruits, comme les légumes, préviennent l'oxydation du cholestérol afin d'empêcher l'apparition de maladies cardio-vasculaires, premières causes de mortalité dans de nombreux pays développés.
Ils fortifient les os, car ils constituent une source non négligeable de calcium, inférieure cependant aux produits laitiers, mais leurs antioxydants (phyto-œstrogènes et potassium) permettent à l'organisme de lutter contre la déminéralisation osseuse et donc contre l'ostéoporose.
Ils préviennent certaines maladies.
Les fruits, comme les légumes, entrent dans les régimes des diabétiques pour leurs glucides lents et leur fibres qui favorisent le contrôle de la glycémie. Le diabète de type gras est l'une des complications de l'obésité, et le nombre de cas a été multiplié par six en quinze ans dans les pays développés.
Leurs apports en antioxydants renforcent les défenses immunitaires.
Ils ont un effet protecteur contre le cancer en général, mais surtout contre les cancers des voies aérodigestives supérieures, de l'estomac, du poumon, du côlon et du rectum.
Depuis trente ans, 350 études menées dans le monde ont porté sur la relation entre la consommation de fruits et de légumes et le risque de cancer. Manger au moins cinq fruits ou légumes différents par jour permet de diminuer de 50 % les risques de cancer, ceci grâce à l'ensemble des composants protecteurs qu'ils contiennent et qui agissent en synergie : fibres alimentaires, vitamines, sels minéraux, polyphénols et autres micro-nutriments.

Constamment menacés de sous-alimentation, les Chinois, les Vietnamiens et d'autres peuples d'Extrême-Orient ont toujours cherché en revanche à échapper à la sous-nutrition et à la malnutrition. Ils ont donc, au cours des âges, appris à reconnaître la valeur diététique et médicinale de chaque denrée. Cette connaissance leur ont permis de se nourrir convenablement malgré les ressources alimentaires relativement maigres dont ils disposaient. Le soja avait été utilisé comme "la vache de l'Orient" pendant des millénaires avant que la science constatât la teneur protéique exceptionnelle de cette légumineuse. En France, on n'en est encore qu'aux premiers balbutiements d'une diététique alguée, alors que les multiples propriétés nutritives et catalytiques des algues marines sont connues et appréciées des Chinois depuis d'innombrables générations.
Le souci nutritionnel des Chinois est toujours indissociable de leur souci d'ordre médical. En effet, pour eux, la santé passe principalement par l'alimentation : c'est en ayant une alimentation appropriée qu'on entretient sa vitalité ou soigne ses maladies. Les médicaments chimiques ne figurent pas dans la pharmacopée traditionnelle chinoise ! Et même l'acupuncture chinoise trouve une rivale dans l'alimentation, car la macrobiotique n'est rien d'autre qu'une alimentation spécifique destinée à régulariser les énergies yang et yin sans avoir recours aux aiguilles ! Chez les Chinois, il n'existe pas de frontière précise entre aliments et médicaments. Cela fait que pratiquement tout vrai cuisinier chinois se double d'un guérisseur — mais quel est le Chinois digne de ce nom qui ne soit pas cuisinier ?
J'ai donc compilé un certain nombre de recettes culinaires d'Extrême-Orient qui, en plus de leurs qualités gastronomiques, sont réputées avoir la propriété soit de prévenir, soit de soulager nos maux les plus courants. Ces recettes sont toutes faciles à réaliser dans le contexte de la vie moderne en Occident. Aucune d'elles ne nécessite des ustensiles spéciaux, et seulement quelques-unes d'entre elles demandent des ingrédients spécifiques — ingrédients qu'on trouve d'ailleurs facilement dans les supermarchés ou épiceries asiatiques. Il arrive qu'une même recette peut exercer des actions différentes : elle est alors proposée contre des maux différents.

La diversité des légumes disponibles à notre époque est impressionnante, même si la consommation se concentre principalement sur quelques espèces, dans l'ordre : pommes de terre, manioc, patates douces, tomates, choux, oignons...
Si l'on se réfère à l'Europe, certains légumes sont connus et consommés depuis l'Antiquité. Ce sont les fèves, lentilles et pois, les navets, les choux pommés, les oignons, les carottes (et le panais bien oublié).
D'autres légumes ont été introduits anciennement, à partir du Xe siècle, d'Orient : artichauts, épinards, aubergines...
Une vague importante d'introduction a suivi la découverte de l'Amérique (1492) : tomate, pomme de terre, haricots, poivrons et piments, courges...
Par la suite, un nombre restreint de nouveaux légumes sont apparus, soit à la suite d'introduction, par exemple le crosne, plante originaire d'Extrême-Orient, soit parce qu'ils ont été « inventés » comme l'endive découverte par un jardinier belge au milieu du XIXE siècle.

"o" Fête du Travail dans le monde "o"

iAujourd'hui, la fête du Travail est commémorée par un jour chômé le 1er mai dans la plupart des pays... mais pas dans tous.
En Belgique (et au Luxembourg), le 1er mai est chômé et les partis socialistes en profitent pour défiler et réaffirmer leur ancrage à gauche. Notons qu'au milieu du XXe siècle, le 1er mai socialiste fut concurrencé par les cortèges « Rerum Novarum » de l'abbé Joseph Cardijn , fondateur de la Jeunesse Ouvrière Catholique (JOC). Ces cortèges d'ouvriers chrétiens avaient lieu le jour de l'Ascension.
En Allemagne , le 1er mai est chômé. On porte traditionnellement un œillet rouge à la boutonière pour la fête du travail. Cette tradition remonte au 1er mai 1890, où pour répondre à l'appel de la IIe Internationale malgré l'interdiction de manifester prévue par la Sozialistengesetz, les militants décident de se retrouver dans des parcs en portant un œillet rouge en signe de reconnaissance. Plutôt délaissé en République fédérale d'Allemagne, ce symbole était très utilisé en République démocratique allemande , entre autres par les organisations de jeunesses.
Le 1er mai donne aussi lieu à des réjouissances en l'honneur du printemps selon le rite ancestral de l'arbre de mai, que l'on retrouve dans différentes régions d'Europe (on peut lire à ce propos un très joli poème de Victor Hugo). En certains endroits, comme à Stuttgart, les enfants profitent de la nuit précédant le 1er mai pour faire des farces d'une façon qui rappelle Halloween.
Aux Pays-Bas , le 1er mai reste ordinairement ouvré. Idem en Suisse. Quelques entreprises et organisations internationales concèdent cependant à leur personnel un jour de congé en l'honneur de la fête des Travailleurs. À noter que le canton de Fribourg commémore le 1er mai... l'arrivée du printemps, avec chants et distribution de friandises aux enfants.
En Israël , on ne chôme pas le 1er mai, bien que l'État juif ait été fondé par des militants socialistes.
Au Royaume-Uni , ce n'est pas le 1er mai qui est chômé mais le premier lundi de mai... ce qui permet aux salariés de bénéficier chaque année d'un week-end prolongé.
Même pragmatisme aux États-Unis et au Canada où la fête du Travail est célébrée le 1er lundi de septembre (les puissants syndicats nord-américains comme l'AFL-CIO n'ont pas voulu s'aligner sur les syndicats européens d'obédience socialiste).
Le 1er mai demeure tout de même célébré par certaines personnes en Amérique du Nord. En effet on distingue la fête du travail (1er lundi de septembre) et la fête des travailleurs et travailleuses(1er mai). Cette dernière étant vue comme une journée de la célébration de la classse ouvrière, alors que l'autre est considérée par plusieurs comme étant une tentative de récupération des luttes ouvrières. Par exemple, au Québec, les grandes centrales syndicales ainsi que quelques partis et organisations de gauche (révolutionnaires ou réformistes) manifestent le 1er mai.
En Australie , quelques syndicats socialistes ou communistes défilent aussi à l'occasion du 1er mai. Mais la fête du Travail est officiellement commémorée à d'autres dates: le 4 mars en Australie occidentale, le 11 mars dans l'État de Victoria, le 6 mai dans le Queensland et le territoire du Nord, le 7 octobre à Canberra (la capitale), en Nouvelle-Galles du Sud (Sydney) et en Australie méridionale.
En bonne élève de l'Europe , l'Amérique latine -Brésil compris- commémore la fête du Travail en chômant le 1er mai. Mais, comme ailleurs, les défilés syndicaux ont largement cédé la place à des activités ludiques: pique-niques, foot-ball...
Au Mexique , dans l'État de Sinaloa , le 1er mai marque la fête de l'été avec la fin de la récolte des tomates et d'autres produits agricoles.
Au Paraguay, en 2002, le chef de l'État a tenté de remplacer le 1er mai par le premier lundi de mai (à la manière britannique). Mais l'opinion publique a rejeté cette réforme.
En Europe de l'Est, en Pologne en particulier, le 1er mai est toujours chômé mais les défilés, qui étaient quasiment obligatoires sous le régime communiste, ne font plus recette.
Les Japonais ne célèbrent pas la fête du Travail mais la première semaine de mai, dite dorée, donne lieu à des festivités et des jours chômés.

Songkran festival on April 13 is Maha Songkran Day or the day to mark the end of the old year, April 14 is Wan Nao which is the day after and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok which the New Year begins. At this time, people from the rural areas who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival. Thus, when the time come, Bangkok temporarily turns into a deserted city. Songkran is a Thai word which means "move" or "change place" as it is the day when the sun changes its position in the zodiac. It is also known as the "Water Festival" as people believe that water will wash away bad luck. The Songkran tradition is recognized as a valuable custom for the Thai community, society and religions. The value for family is to provide the opportunity for family members to gather in order to express their respects to the elders by pouring scented water onto the hands of their parents and grandparents and to present them gifts including making merits to dedicate the result to their ancestors. The elders in return wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity. The values for community is to provide the opportunity to create unity in the community such as to jointly acquire merits, to meet each other and to enjoy the entertaining events. And for the society value is to create concern upon environment with cooperation such as to clean houses, temples, public places and official buildings. Thais value the religion bye means of merits acquisition, offerings alms to monks, Dhamma Practice, listening to sermon and monks-bathing. In the afternoon, after performing a bathing rite for Buddha images and the monks, the celebrants both young and old, joyfully splash water oon each other. The most-talked about celebration takes place in the northern province of Chiang Mai where Songkran is celebrated from April 13 to 15. During this period, people from all parts of the country flock there to enjoy the water festival, to watch the Miss Songkran Contest and the beautiful parades.

Planter des arbres fruitiers résistant aux maladies
Dans un monde de plus en plus préoccupé par l’impact des pesticides sur la santé et l’environnement, il n’est pas étonnant de constater que de nombreuses recherches au pays portent sur le développement d’arbres fruitiers résistant aux maladies. À partir de ce printemps, les consommateurs ne pourront plus se procurer le Bénomyl ni aucun autre fongicide auparavant recommandé pour le traitement des maladies sur les arbres fruitiers.
Les maladies des pommiers
La maladie la plus répandue et la plus facile à dépister est la tavelure (Venturia inaequalis) qui, au stade avancé, forme des galles brunes à la surface des pommes et des feuilles. En 2001, la lutte à la tavelure représentait environ les deux tiers des achats de pesticides consacrés aux arbres fruitiers et environ 10 % du coût total des frais des producteurs. Une infestation importante entraîne la chute prématurée des feuilles et peut affecter la production fruitière, par baisse de la photosynthèse. On peut manger sans danger une pomme atteinte de la tavelure, mais la majorité des consommateurs préfèrent des fruits parfaits. Les insectes et les maladies ont cet étonnant pouvoir de s’adapter rapidement à de nouvelles conditions de vie. Les pesticides détruisent les plus faibles, mais il suffit qu’un ou deux individus survivent et une nouvelle souche se développe. Malgré un abus de produits nocifs pour l’environnement, tant par leurs procédés de fabrication que par leurs effets résiduels, la maladie persiste. Les nouvelles technologies permettent de modifier la plante génétiquement et ce sont les plantes elles-mêmes qui possèdent dorénavant la résistance aux pathogènes. Plusieurs variétés résistant à la tavelure résistent aussi à la rouille et au mildiou. Par ailleurs, plusieurs travaux de recherche sont en cours pour développer de nouvelles variétés résistant à toutes les maladies qui affectent les pommiers, mais peu de ces variétés sont présentement disponibles sur le marché. Ces maladies se développent également sur les pommetiers et les poiriers. Il faut savoir que certaines variétés dites «résistantes» peuvent être attaquées, mais la fréquence et l’importance des infestations sont considérablement réduites comparativement aux variétés sensibles.
Deux variétés prometteuses
Deux nouveautés se distinguent en tant que pommes très résistantes et de qualité supérieure. L’hybride ‘Belmac’, un croisement de la variété ‘Spartan’, produit une pomme savoureuse qui se conserve bien et peut aussi servir dans l’industrie du jus. Avec la variété ‘Primevère’, on obtient une grosse pomme, bonne au goût et qui se conserve bien, bien qu’elle semble un peu moins rustique que la ‘Belmac’. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. The Mickey icon, a three-circle silhouette of Mickey's head, serves as the logo for most of Disney's subsidiaries which contain the name 'Disney'. Andy Warhol's portrait The Art of Mickey Mouse used Warhol's famous pop art techniques on the classic mouse.

Winnie the Pooh History In 1914, during World War 1, troops from Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) were being transported to eastern Canada on their way overseas to Europe. When the train stopped at White River, Ontario, there was a trapper standing on the platform with a bear cub. One of the soldiers who stepped off the train to take a break was Captain Harry Colebourn, a Canadian Army veterinarian. Colebourn bought the cub for $20.00 and named her "Winnipeg", or "Winnie" for short. Winnie became the mascot of the second Canadian Infantry Brigade and went to Britain with the unit. Unfortunately, when the Brigade was posted to the battlefields of France, Winnie could not go. She was placed instead with the London Zoo, in Regent's Park. Over the years the bear became very popular with the children and was well known for her playful nature. One little boy, in particular, was attracted to Winnie. The little boy's father (knowing of his son's attraction to the bear) would often tell him bedtime stories about the bear and a make-believe world. The little boy (Christopher Robin Milne) was a featured character in most of those stories. The little boy's father (A.A. Milne) went on to write a series of books about "Winnie-the-Pooh" (the bear from Winnipeg), Christopher Robin (his son), and their friends at "100-Aker Wood".
